"Digital books are at a rapid growth and currently make up 20 percent of all books sold to the general public in the US alone. As the digital market is expanding, the need for analogue books is becoming more redundant. The redesign of the prodigious novel Star Maker, by William Olaf Stapledon, first published in 1937, serves as an experiment on highlighting the qualities of a book’s physical existence, some of which cannot be accommodated by an e-book.

This project is a comprehensive study of paper material, text layout and physical size. The book features various paper goods and weights along with a bookcase containing 16 A5-sized artworks representing a visual interpretation of each chapter, and a square-sized constellation map of the books content.”

Daniel Siim is a Copenhagen-based designer and a BA graduate from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Schools of Architecture, Design and Conservation. His practice approach a wide scale of graphic design with a focus on printed matter, from small press to major publishing.

JP GRAZIANO Concept by Jen Serafini and Jack Muldowney

Jen and Jack wanted to collaborate on a branding project together, so they decided to rebrand their favorite sandwich shop, JP Graziano, as a concept design.

JP Graziano is one of the oldest and most recognized sandwich shops and Italian grocer here in the West Loop of Chicago. They pride themselves on a rich history and generations of a family owned business, which is something Jen and Jack wanted to focus on and celebrate in their new concept. The colors lend themselves to a more traditional Italian look, while the clean and simple typography balances out the style by bringing in some more modern touches. They had a ton of fun building this brand out, from postcards to stickers and sandwich wrappers.

"Our main objective was to re-think traditional packaging methodology. Used as a tool to showcase our ability to think & work beyond convention, we determined from the out-set that drawing inspiration from uncommon sources was essential to the success of the project. Cue the Terpentine: An attractive shape, an airtight seal, something unexpected. This container delivered on all counts, but how to break from the unfriendly, industrial, and for all intensive purposes toxic associations we as consumers have made with that form?

A bright yet soft color palette combined with elegant and approachable serif type helps soften the brand against the harshness of material. A quick sand, prime, and dip in paint helps add some individuality among the products and re-enforces the handmade nature of the product, No two wishbones being exactly the same.”

AKA is not one of those big fancy agencies – they are a small focused design studio that works efficiently to make the most of budgets and timelines through their streamlined positioning and design process. They are a team that believes that “all work and no play makes for a dull day”. While they take their work seriously, they believe you need to enjoy the ride – as the journey is often just as important as the end result.
